SekolahMenengah Long Gafar (SMKLG) telah ditubuhkan pada Januari 1965 dengan nama Sekolah Menengah Rendah Kubang Keranji, SMKLG terletak di Kubang Keranji, 16150 Kota Bharu, Kelantan. Jarak sekolah ini dari Kota Bharu lebih kurang 10 kilometer melalu'i jalan Kota Bharu - Pasir Puteh.
Pada peringkat awal penubuhan SMKLG tidak mempunyai bangunan sendiri dan terpaksa menum menumpang di Sekolah Rendah Long Gafar (Sek. Ren. Kubang Keranji). Bilangan pelajarnya seramai 90 orang yang semuanya tingkatan satu dan waktu pembelajarana pada sebelah petang.
Pada tahun 1970, SMKLG telah mendapat bangunan sendiri yang mengandungi sebuah makmal sains, sebuah bilik jahitan, bilik darjah dan pejabat pengetua. Pada 1 7hb. Julai 1974, sekolah ini ditukar nama kepada Sekolah Menengah Long Gafar. Nama ini diambil sempena nama Long Gafar seorang raja sekitar tahun 1 670an. Baginda merupakan seorang raja yang warak, adil, berani, tangkas bermai senjata, disegani dan digeruni. Baginda mangkat ketika berusia 110 tahun. Jenazah baginda dimakamkan di Kampung Limbat, kira-kira 1 kilometer dari SMKLG. Justeru, sifat-sifatterpuji yang dimiliki oleh baginda itulah mendorong sekolah ini diberi nama sedemikian. Harapan sekolah ini juga mempunyai keistimewaan, masyhur dan terkenal sebagaiman Raja Long Gafar.
Semasa penubuhnannya pada tahun1965, SMKLG hanya mempunyai seramai 4 orang tenaga pengajar sahaja. Walau bagaimanapun bilangan ini sentiasa bertambah dari semasa ke semasa selaras dengan pertambahan pelajar. Kini SMKLG mempunyai 90 orang guru dengan bilangan pelajarnya seramai 1468 orang.
Sesi pembelajaran di SMKLG adalah dalam dua sesi iaitu sesi pagi dan petang. Bilangan bilik darjah yang ada sebanyak 35 unit tidak dapat menampung bilangan kelas sebanyak 46 kelas. Oleh itu pelajar-pelajar tingkatan 1 dan 2 terpaksa belajar di sesi petang.
Sejak penubuhannya 40 tahun yang lalu, SMKLG telah mengorak langkah setanding dengan sekolah-sekolah harian lain di negeri Kelantan sama ada dalam bidang akademik atau bidang-bidang lain.
